So this is sadly my last post. I hope you found my information helpful and intriguing. I had fun teaching you guys on Sparta's military. My first post was about Spartan training and a mans life in Sparta. For my second post I talked about what Spartan weapons were, called, and how they were used. Lastly for my third post I talked about why Sparta threw people in a hole. I think it was important to research these topics because Sparta impacted the world today in many ways. The importance of my research is important because I have learned many things for example Spartans captured their enemies, they used very harmful weapons, and boys were taken from their family at the age of seven. My research I have found is related to our world today for example Sparta had many good military tactics that have been inspired by Alexander the Great. Well I really enjoyed teaching y'all. Again I hope you found my information helpful and inspiring. Thank you!!
Spartan's captured their enemies during battle. When they returned to Sparta they would throw their enemies in a big hole. Spartan's also threw criminals that were found guilty. This hole had no name what so ever. In 406BC the hole was not being used anymore. When this hole was found by an archeologist it was found with a large amount of skeletons. Most of these skeletons belonged to adults with fractures that extended over the body or have marks with spears or arrow heads. What were some weapons?
Spears were the main weapon for any Greek solider to use. Spears in Sparta were called dories. A spear length was believed to be around 7 to 9 feet tall. Spear heads were usually made out of iron or bronze. The spear was typically held in one hand depending on the situation so that on the other arm the shield was placed. On the butt of the spear it was capped with a butt spike called a sauroter. Sauroter is Greek for "lizard killer." The sauroter had many purposes. Warriors could stand their spear up or it was used as a secondary weapon. If the spear head broke off then the sauroter was used to kill. The second weapon was a short sword. The short sword was called a xiphos. The normal size of a xiphos was around two feet but Spartan xiphos where only around 12-18 inches. This shows how smart and intelligent Sparta is. Sparta made their xiphos smaller so they could thrust it in small gaps usually between shields and armor. The groin and throat were the favorite targets for the Spartan's. The deadliest weapon was called the kopis. The kopis was a brutal hacking weapon formed as a thick curved sword. A kopis was made out of iron. Spartan warriors used a kopis more like an axe then a sword. A kopis made more inflicting nasty wounds compared to the clear holes made from the spears and swords. The last weapon was a shield. Spartan's saw a shield as a protector and a weapon. Shields were used to protect warriors from other weapons but also used to bash the enemy. Bashing could lead the enemy to be stunned or fall over. Shields were made from wood and layered over with bronze. Shields weighed 30 pounds. A shield was a great blunt weapon. Some Spartan's loved to club the enemy with their shields. Being clubbed to death by Sparta's great shields was more unpleasant than being hacked apart by a kopis. Spartan's had the most deadliest weapons in the ancient world's.
